FIREARMS LICENSING: LICENSE TO CARRY AND FID CARDS
APPLY ONLINE
All new and renewal applications must be submitted through the Massachusetts MIRCS Unified Gun Portal using a MyMassGov account.
Apply or renew at:
my.mass.gov/
Please follow all instructions in the portal. Missing information or failure to submit the required payment to the Weymouth Police Department will delay processing.
For the best experience, applicants should use a desktop or laptop computer to create their account and complete the application.
NEW APPLICANTS
All new LTC and FID applicants must schedule an appointment for an interview and fingerprints.
Submit your application through MyMassGov before requesting an appointment.
To request an appointment, email Detective Bob Sullivan at [email protected] .
Please bring the following items to your appointment:
A copy of your Massachusetts driver's license or identification card
A bank check or money order for the applicable fee, payable to the Town of Weymouth
A copy of your approved firearms safety certificate
Proof of Weymouth residency, such as a lease, mortgage statement, utility bill, tax bill, recent pay stub, W-2, or student-loan document
A birth certificate or valid United States passport
If applicable, a copy of your Permanent Resident Card, passport, or naturalization certificate
Personal checks, cash, and credit or debit cards are not accepted.
RENEWAL APPLICANTS
Renewal applicants do not need an appointment.
Complete your renewal application through MyMassGov. Your application will not be processed by the Weymouth Police Department until payment and the required documents are received.
Place the following items in an envelope:
Bank check or money order for the applicable fee, payable to the Town of Weymouth
A copy of your driver's license or identification card
A copy of your current LTC or FID card
The envelope may be placed in the mail slot at the Licensing Office at any time. The office is located on the left after entering the police station, near the vending machines.
Please do not submit a renewal application more than four months before the expiration date.
If you apply for renewal before your current license expires, the license remains valid for all lawful purposes until the renewal application is approved or denied.
If your license is approaching expiration, contact the Licensing Office so we can review its status.
ANSWER ALL APPLICATION QUESTIONS TRUTHFULLY
Applicants must answer every question completely and truthfully. Pay particular attention to the criminal-history question asking whether you have ever been arrested or appeared in court as a defendant for a criminal offense.
You must disclose:
Adult and juvenile court appearances
Sealed records
Cases in which you were found not guilty
Charges that were dismissed
Cases continued without a finding
Appearances made by an attorney on your behalf
Criminal traffic matters
"Appeared" does not necessarily mean that you were arrested.
A prior arrest or conviction does not automatically prohibit someone from receiving an LTC or FID card. However, failure to disclose required information may result in denial of the application.
Some traffic offenses are criminal. If you are unsure of your history, obtain a copy of your Criminal Offender Record Information before completing the application.
RESIDENCY AND ADDRESS REQUIREMENTS
Before applying through the Town of Weymouth, your Massachusetts driver's license or identification card must display your current Weymouth address. Address changes must be completed through the Registry of Motor Vehicles before applying as a new resident or renewing a license previously issued by another municipality.
Applicants moving from another state must provide proof of Weymouth residency.
Changes of address or name and firearm registrations must be completed through the MyMassGov portal.
If you cannot access the portal, contact the Massachusetts Firearms Records Bureau before contacting the Weymouth Police Department. Paper applications are not accepted.
FIREARMS SAFETY CERTIFICATES
First-time LTC or FID applicants are required to attend a State-Certified Massachusetts Hunter Safety course or Massachusetts State Police Basic Firearms Safety course.
A certificate from an approved course must be presented on the date of the applicant's appointment. The course must include a live-fire segment, and the applicant must provide proof of completing that segment, such as a target dated and signed by the instructor that includes the instructor's identification number.
These requirements do not apply to renewal applicants.
Applicants should bring their safety certificate and proof of completing the live-fire segment to their appointment for review.
FEES AND PAYMENT
The standard application fee is $100 for new applications and renewals. Application fees are non-refundable.
Payment must be made by bank check or money order payable to the Town of Weymouth.
The following payment methods are not accepted:
Personal checks
Cash
Credit cards
Debit cards
There is no renewal fee for applicants who are age 70 or older at the time of renewal.
The LTC application fee for active or retired law-enforcement officials is $25 with proof of credentials. A law-enforcement officer applying for renewal through their employing agency may be exempt from the renewal fee.
CARD PRODUCTION AND DELIVERY
After an application has been approved, please allow approximately 8 to 12 weeks for the state to produce and deliver the physical LTC or FID card.
An application may appear as approved in the state system before the Weymouth Police Department receives the completed card. Applicants will be contacted or will receive the card after state production and delivery are complete.
