Firearms Licensing
If you are looking to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms (LTC) or a Firearms Identification Card (FID) you must complete the following steps.
First Time Application Process
Complete an approved Basic Firearms Safety Course, "live fire" certification.
Complete a License to Carry Firearms Application or the Firearms Identification Card Application You must 21 or older to obtain an LTC and 18 or older (or provide parental permission) for an FID.
Schedule an appointment with a licensing officer.
Interview Appointment
You will need to bring the following items with you to your licensing interview appointment:
The completed application from step #2 above.
Copy of the certificate of completion for your Firearms Safety Course.
A check or money order made payable to the Town of Braintree (see fee schedule ).
Copy of MA Driver s License.
Copy of your birth certificate or passport. If born outside of the U.S. you will need a copy of your naturalization papers.
Proof of Braintree residency (i.e. Mortgage, lease agreement, tax document, Utility bill)
Appointments:
Appointments can be made by contacting the licensing officer. Appointments fill up quickly and we ask that you continue to be patient as we are experiencing an unprecedented demand for license to carry appointments.
We also ask that you only call or email for an appointment or specific questions that cannot be answered by the Mass Firearms Records Bureau .

Renewal Applications
Renewal applications can be completed online but they will not be processed until payment is received.
Complete the renewal application at the MIRCS Firearms Portal
Bring a check or money order to the Braintree Police Department Records Division (see fee schedule ).
You can follow the progress of your renewal application with the login credentials you created in step1.
If you do not wish to renew online you can schedule an appointment with the licensing officer or drop off your application with a check or money order to the Braintree Police Records Division.
The Records Department is open as follows:
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Tuesday 8:30 am - 7 pm
Friday 8:30 am - 1 pm
REMEMBER - Your application will not be processed until payment is received.
Change of Address or PIN Retrieval
To change the address of your current LTC or FID visit the Mass Firearms Records Bureau website or call 617-660-4722.
To obtain or retrieve your Firearms License PIN visit the Mass Firearms Records Bureau website or call 617-660-4722.
Post Interview
Once a determination has been made on whether to issue you a License to Carry Firearms or an FID card your application will be processed. Please be patient as it could take up to 3 months.
Important Notice on Questions #4: Have you ever been arrested or appeared in any court as a defendant for any criminal offenses?
Key word is "APPEARED", not necessarily arrested. Appearances by an attorney on your behalf must be disclosed. Having been arrested and convicted of a crime does not necessarily prohibit you from getting an LTC or FID. Not disclosing this information does. Understand that "ever appeared" includes all adult and juvenile appearances. It does not matter if you were found not guilty or if the charges were dismissed or continued without a finding. Please write it down. If you have a sealed record it will still show on your background checks, you must let us know. We will not accept "I forgot" or "They told me it would not show up" or "That was so long ago."
Remember - You are signing under the penalties of perjury. If you are untruthful, you will be denied and may face prosecution.
