On December 14, 2018, Text-to-9-1-1 was deployed across the Commonwealth. This is one of the most exciting changes for accessibility to emergency services in more than 20 years. When a citizen sends a text message to 911, it will be routed to an emergency call center based on the location information provided by the carrier. For this reason, when a citizen sends a Text-to-9-1-1, they should make every effort to text the town name, address or location that they are located in. FID & LTC: To renew or apply for FID or LTC please contact the station at 413-628-4441 Ext: 1 to schedule an appointment.
MA Firearms Portal - FID/LTC Applications
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts firearms portal went online in 2025. This portal gives residents the ability to start the renewal or new-applicant application process for a License to Carry a Firearm (LTC) or Firearms Identification Card (FID) online. Portal applications do not automatically become a valid permit.
If you choose to apply for your license to carry through the online portal , it is your responsibility to contact the Chief to make an in-person appointment to complete the licensing process.
FID/LTC reminders:
Renewals - Make sure to apply for new permit before the expiration date, at least 60 days, this ensures that if your new permit arrives after that date, you are still active.
Portal application dates do not count until the licensing authority (your police department) processes the permit.
If applied for after the expiration date, you cannot carry under your old LTC until new one is in hand.
If you are over 70 there is no fee, but you still have to go through the application process and make an appointment with your department.
Fees: $100.00 cash or check for those folks 69 and younger.
New applicants must have completed a firearms safety course and have a certificate of completion.
Update to Safety Course Requirements for NEW Licenses
The Executive Office of Public Safety and Security has announced changes to the requirements for obtaining a Firearms Identification (FID) or License to Carry (LTC). The Basic Firearms Safety (BFS) Course requirements now include additional components, including live fire training.
Important Date - New APPLICANTS - April 3, 2026 - Applicants MUST complete the newly updated BFS course to apply. Prior certifications with out the new requirements will not be accepted after April 2, 2026.
Renewals - These new requirements do NOT apply to individuals renewing an existing and active LTC or FID.

Notices
Civil Trespass Orders: As of July 1, 2026, the Ashfield Police Department will no longer be issuing civil trespass orders through the department. The orders previously placed by the Ashfield Police Department are still in effect until rescinded by the property owner. If a civil trespass order is needed, please contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office - Civil Process Division. For contact information refer to the Civil Trespass Orders notice, here .
All Night Parking Ban : As of December 1, 2017 it is unlawful to park vehicles on any street for a period of time longer than one hour between the hours of 11:00 PM and 8:00 AM. Any vehicle parked illegally under the section III of the Traffic Rules and Orders of the Town of Ashfield shall be towed and the owners of said vehicle shall be responsible for such towing charges.
